Antoinette Moran, MD
Ava is a 10-year-old girl recently diagnosed with Type 1 Diabetes after presenting to the ER with mild DKA two weeks ago. She was previously healthy, with a normal physical exam and a family history of hypothyroidism in a paternal great aunt. Since diagnosis, she has regained her lost weight and her insulin needs have decreased. She lives with her four siblings—16-year-old twins Asher and Ezra, Leo (14), and Charlotte (11). Family screening and research participation were discussed during diabetes education.
Mohammed is a 13-year-old boy with a three-year history of well-controlled asthma on low-dose inhaled fluticasone. He was admitted for an asthma exacerbation during a mild COVID-19 infection and treated with IV prednisone. His glucose was elevated on admission but normalized within 36 hours. He recovered fully and returned to baseline health by his one-month follow-up. Autoantibody testing was positive for GAD and IA-2, with an HbA1c of 5.6%.
